Pennyroyal Quarry
August 11th & 12th, 2007 |
| |
You probably already know that the weather this weekend
was searingly hot, and might know that the water temp at
PennyRoyal is 45 F from a depth of 28 ft. on down to the
bottom, but you couldn't possibly know what a great time
we had diving together unless you were one of the 20+
folks who made the trip this weekend.
We had a very enthusiastic group of divers of all levels
from newly certified to instructors, and everyone got to
make the dives they wanted with a variety of buddies.
Only 1 diver was getting a certification (Deep
Specialty), so the emphasis was on Fun, trying new gear,
skill development, playing with scooters (DPVs), and
Fun! There is a group of "attractions" at a depth of 15
ft. for those who don't want to get too cold, a group of
"attractions" at 55-80 ft. depth for an easy deep dive,
and an underwater forest at 70-90 ft. depth on the far
side of the quarry for a relaxing dive. The deep side of
the quarry is 80-130 ft. deep, with a lot of ground to
explore and interesting walls. Visibility was a little
less than Penny Royal is known for, but still great at
20-40 ft. And the shallow water was somewhere around 84
F, I think--I didn't stay in it long enough to get a
good reading
Our trip leaders, Mark & Terri Swink, did a tremendous
job of providing and coordinating the Saturday BBQ
lunch--which was plentiful enough to provide leftovers
that also fed us for Saturday eve and Sunday lunch. They
also negotiated discounted entry fees and tank fill
prices as well as a great hotel rate, and got Kris
(Penny Royal's operator) to provide us with a couple fly
tents for shade in addition to the nice pavilion. Kris
also treated us to a movie night, projecting Pirates of
the Carribean on one of the quarry walls along with
popcorn Saturday night.
Thank you, Mark & Terri, for making a great event out of
what for most of us was a first trip to Penny Royal!
