5th Annual Polar Bear Dive
January 1st, 2008

First, thanks to Mark and whomever else helped him set up the tarps as a wind break around our pavilion while I was submerged doing my first dive of the day.

Second, thanks to Glen and his bunch for the hot chili and hot chocolate along with dessert snacks for between dives.

While it was definitely cold, at about 28 F, we were lucky that the temp was just high enough that gear didn't instantly freeze upon exiting the water. The water was very comfortable, 48 F at the surface and the usual lower temps as you go deeper. Visibility was fantastic, as good as 40+ feet in some areas, and the attractions had been thoroughly scrubbed for the event--I've never seen the inside of the 727 so clean!

The official Polar Bear dive commenced at about 12:30 pm, with about 30 divers all giant striding off the main dock in unison for the TV camera.

Since the water was fairly uniform in temperature, the fish were scattered throughout the water column, with some Spoonbill swimming shallow and some Bluegill near the bottom, and giant albino catfish everywhere.

As far as I could tell, everyone was having a great time and there were no flooded drysuit incidents.

BTW-a few diehards had made a midnight dive on New Year's Eve.
